Safety

Candles add warmth and ambiance to your home, but they can also be a fire hazard if they are not used properly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, candles cause an average of 21 home fires every day and many of these fires could be avoided if people followed basic candle safety tips.

A candle contains a wax compound, a cotton wick and additives for fragrance, color or other properties. In general, candles create no smoke and little ash when burning. When the flame passes over the wax, it “consumes” the wax to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide. These are the same harmless byproducts that humans exhale when breathing.

It is important to keep your candle in sight at all times, and to not let it burn down past the bottom of its holder or container. This will help to prevent the potential of dripping and the risk of glass-to-glass contact and heat damage to countertops, floors and other surfaces. A simple candle snuffer is an excellent way to extinguish a candle, which also helps prevent hot wax spattering that can break glass containers. Never use water to extinguish a candle, as this can cause the wax to crack and splatter.

Always trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting. This will reduce the risk of a dangerously high flame and help the candle last longer. Always use a noncombustible holder and place the candle away from drafts, vents and other sources of fire. Keep lighted candles out of the reach of children and pets. Discontinue burning a candle when the wax pool reaches the edge of its container or when 2 inches remains in a votive or jar candle.

A candle can also be used for light during a power outage, but flashlights are more suitable and safer in case the candle falls over or catches something nearby on fire. It is also a good idea to use a battery-operated flashlight instead of a candle when going into a closet to look for clothing or when fueling equipment such as lanterns and kerosene heaters.

Health

Candles are popular for relaxation, mood and ambiance but some worry they pose health risks. Fragranced candles usually contain synthetic chemicals known as phthalates that are released when the candle burns, and may be inhaled or absorbed through your skin. These chemicals may cause headache, eye irritation and asthma symptoms. They are also known to trigger allergies and can affect hormone levels.

A 2009 study found a link between frequent use of scented candles and bladder cancer, while another suggests that phthalates from these chemicals can interfere with your body’s natural ability to sense smells. Other research has cited links between scented candles and respiratory and other health problems such as wheezing, sinus irritation, sneezing and allergic rhinitis.

It’s important to note, however, that a lot of the data from some of this research has been challenged or discredited. And even when the chemicals are present, they’re typically in “relatively trivial concentrations,” Pamela Dalton, a sensory scientist at Monell Chemical Senses Center, tells Smarter. She says people are exposed to far more toxic chemicals on a daily basis from walking out on a busy street or breathing in car exhaust.

Candles can also contribute to indoor air pollution by releasing black carbon, formaldehyde, particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This is especially problematic for children, elderly people and those with heart or lung conditions. It’s important to make sure that candles are in well-ventilated areas and blown out completely before leaving the room or going to sleep, experts say.

It’s also important to avoid burning candles in drafty rooms and keep them away from anything flammable, including fabric, wood and books. And be sure to place them in sturdy, stable holders so they don’t tip over easily. An average of 20 home candle fires are reported every day, per the National Fire Protection Association, and these can lead to serious injuries or even death.

Atmosphere

Candles have been used for centuries to set the mood and create a relaxing atmosphere. They can help you unwind after a long day, prepare for a romantic night, or just elevate your everyday routine. By selecting the right scent, size, and placement, candles can help you craft a unique ambiance that aligns with your goals.

Whether you’re looking to generate an airy, whimsical ambiance or an earthy, organic feeling, our luxury-quality candles can help you accomplish your goal. Our fragrances are designed with natural ingredients and formulated to be soothing rather than overpowering. This allows the fragrances to linger in the air for an extended period of time, and they won’t interfere with any allergy issues you may have.

Our candles also blend beautifully with other decor elements in your home. They’re easy to incorporate into areas where other decor items might be difficult to work into due to their size or expected convention. For example, if you’re trying to craft the ultimate vintage-style reading nook, our Homespun Linen candle can complement it perfectly with top notes of sandalwood and fragrant jasmine for a soothing aroma.

You can also use these candles to accent specific areas of your home, such as the kitchen, bathroom, or home office. In these spaces, you can place them on a shelf or in a cabinet for a decorative touch that’s also functional.

If you’re experimenting with different scents and sizes, try mixing and matching them for a more unique effect. Larger candles can be a focal point on a table or mantle, while smaller ones can create an intimate ambiance in your bedroom or bathroom. You can even use scented candles in your living room or on the porch for an inviting feel when hosting guests. Just be sure to keep them away from flammable objects and never leave them burning unattended.
